Topciment — Microfino

Instructions for application of Microfino on walls, worktops, and detailed surfaces.

🛑 Before Starting the Project:
• Substrate and Cleanliness: Ensure the surface is sound, dry, and clean from dirt and grease. Careless cleaning and residual dust will cause Microfino to scratch due to the coarser grains from Microbase.
• Substrate Must Be Flat: Microfino builds extremely thinly and will not conceal underlying depressions or imperfections.
• Working Temperature: Room and substrate temperatures must be maintained between +10 °C and +25 °C throughout the entire project.
• Application on Floors: Microfino can be used on smaller residential floor areas with light wear, but is discouraged on larger floor areas as the material becomes very difficult to apply evenly due to the required technique.

1. Fields of Use and Tool Selection

Microfino provides a smooth surface with an ultra-fine texture and vibrant movement. Tool selection determines the final appearance (the plastic trowel is the most popular choice):

Creates a softer, calmer, and more uniform surface completely free from metal burnish marks.

The plastic tool is by far the most popular choice and is always recommended for white and light colours to keep the surface clean and even.
Steel Trowel (Venetian Inox) Marbling

Steel compacts the surface, creating pronounced movement, burnish marks, and marble-like variations.

Best suited for darker colours. On light colours, steel can leave dark marks (burnishing) if too much pressure is applied.

2. Preparation and Mixing

Thorough Cleaning of the Base Coat

The base coat must be sanded completely flat with 40-grit silicon carbide abrasives. Vacuum thoroughly and wipe down the surface with a dry microfiber cloth. If cleaning is neglected, loose Microbase grains will drag during troweling and scratch the thin Microfino surface.

Mixing

Measure out Acricem Resin and colour pigment in a clean bucket and stir thoroughly. Gradually add the Microfino powder while stirring, then mix with a mechanical paddle mixer on low speed for at least 4 minutes until lump-free. Use the mixing app to calculate exact batch sizes based on 10 kg powder.

The mixed mortar remains workable for approximately 2–3 hours in the bucket depending on ambient temperature and humidity.

3. Application

Step-by-Step Technique

1. Perimeters & Corners: Start in an upper corner. Spread material along edges (approx. 30–40 cm along ceilings and 50–70 cm down). Keep the top side of the tool clean from dry crumbs.
2. Distribute: Spot paste directly along the bottom edge of the newly laid section.
3. Angle and Scraping Sound: Hold the trowel at an angle of at least 45 degrees with light pressure so you are only filling pores. Listen for the scraping sound—if no scraping sound is heard, the paste is being applied too thick, increasing the risk of air bubbles.
4. Break the Pattern: Immediately rework the section with irregular, multidirectional strokes to eliminate straight drag lines and create subtle movement.
5. Continue & Maintain a Wet Edge: Apply fresh paste below the completed section (similar to step 1). Then proceed upwards along the edge of the first section. Keep edges wet so the material blends seamlessly without lap marks.

Number of Coats

After 1 coat of Microfino, the surface is technically complete. Additional coats are not recommended on floors as thicker buildups reduce durability. If a calmer, more homogeneous surface is desired on walls, apply a second thin coat using the same technique, or use a steel trowel on coat 2 for pronounced marbling.

💡 Tips for Crisp Internal and External Corners (Final Coat):
To easily achieve clean, sharp corners with Microfino, apply masking tape along the corners of the 2 adjoining walls on the final coat (next to the wall you are applying to). Then repeat the same process on the opposite wall.
• Remove the tape immediately once you are done with the wall.
• Place a fan facing the finished walls for effective drying.
• Sand and re-tape: After 2–3 hours, you can sand the corners of the finished walls, mask them with tape, and apply the final coat to the remaining walls.
This technique works on both internal and external corners. It is not mandatory, but it makes achieving a flawless result much easier.

4. Next Steps: Sanding and Sealing

Allow the surface to dry for 24 hours. Sand Microfino gently with 120-grit silicon carbide abrasives using a machine sander (or 240-grit by hand). Vacuum and wipe the surface clean with a dry microfiber cloth before sealing:

🛡️ Safety & Protective Equipment:
• Protective Equipment: The product contains cement and can irritate skin and eyes. Wear protective gloves and safety goggles. Always wear particulate respiratory protection (P2/P3) during powder mixing and all sanding operations. Ensure good ventilation.
• Cleaning: Clean tools immediately with water after use before the mortar cures. For hardened residue, clean tools using acetone or solvent wipes.
