Craftsman Guide / Epoxy Primer

Topciment — Primapox 100 Barrier

Practical guide for the two-component epoxy primer as a vapor barrier, moisture barrier, and blocking layer prior to microcement application.

Primapox 100 Barrier stops capillary moisture and acts as an effective vapor barrier. Use the product on tiles and pavers to prevent underlying tile adhesive joints and grid patterns from telegraphing or bleeding through into the finished microcement. It also functions as a blocking layer between substrates of varying porosity.

On-Site Conditions

Substrate: Ensure the surface is sound, solid, rigid, and completely clean from sanding dust, grease, soap residue, and oil.
Moisture: Can be applied to damp substrates, but the surface must never be saturated or have standing water puddles.
Working Climate: Maintain a minimum of +15 °C room temperature and a maximum of 65% relative humidity (RH) during application.

Mixing Ratio & Pot Life

The mixing ratio is strictly controlled by weight: 62.5 g Component A : 37.5 g Component B (or 1.67 : 1 by weight).

1.
Stir Component A thoroughly in the container before adding the hardener.
2.
Pour the entire weighed amount of Component B into Component A under constant stirring.
3.
Mix for 2–3 minutes with a mechanical paddle mixer at low speed. Keep the paddle submerged to avoid whipping in air bubbles.
Short Pot Life in Bucket:
In the bucket, the pot life is only 20 minutes at +20 °C. Once rolled out on the surface, the open time is approximately 8 hours.

Always mix small batches due to the rapid exothermic reaction. Make a test mix of maximum 1 kg the first time. The more mixed material left sitting in the bucket, the faster it cures and builds up intense heat.

Application & Method Selection

Apply the product using a roller, smoothing spatula, or steel trowel. Select the method based on substrate requirements:

Method A: Vapor Barrier (Tiles, Pavers & Bathroom Floors)

Use this method to prevent grout joints from bleeding through into the microcement. Also used when applying microcement to bathroom floors only, preventing water from being drawn into the adhesive bed around the drain, migrating through joints, and staining the cement:

1. Application: Apply an even coat of Primapox 100 Barrier with a short-pile roller or steel trowel.
2. Sand Blinding: Immediately broadcast dry silica sand (0.3–0.8 mm) over the fully wet surface until saturated. Sand coverage: approx. 1 kg/m².
3. Curing & Cleanup: Allow to cure for 24 hours. Sweep and vacuum away all loose, excess sand before troweling the base coat.
Method B: Capillary Moisture Barrier (Rising Damp in Concrete)

Use this method to block rising ground damp or deep moisture within concrete structures:

1. Coat 1: Roll out an even coat of Primapox 100 Barrier.
2. Sand Blinding: Immediately broadcast dry silica sand (0.3–0.8 mm) into the wet layer. Sand coverage: approx. 1 kg/m².
3. Curing: Allow to cure for 24 hours and vacuum away all loose sand.
4. Coat 2: Trowel out a second coat of Primapox 100 Barrier with a steel trowel to completely seal and close the surface.
🧼 Tool Cleaning: Dispose of used roller sleeves immediately. Clean steel tools and spatulas immediately with solvent thinner or chemical cleaning wipes before the epoxy sets.

Next Steps: Substrate Preparation & Base Coat

Once Primapox has cured and the surface is vacuumed clean, proceed with substrate preparation or apply the base coat:

🛑 Safety & Protective Equipment (Professional Use Only):
• The product is highly reactive and may cause skin irritation, chemical burns, and allergic reactions.
• Ensure continuous and adequate ventilation in the workspace.
• Always wear chemical-resistant gloves designated for epoxy work and tight-fitting safety goggles.
• Use respiratory protection with gas/chemical vapor filters if ventilation is insufficient.
